8 Tips to Protect Your Website from Hackers

If you're running a website and you think you're safe against hackers, you're not. Malicious people like to compromise sites every way they can think of. No matter if you don't post important stuff there.

The majority of security breaches registered when it comes to websites target their servers. Why? Because hackers want to make good use of them. How? By receiving and passing on spam. Servers can also be used to serve illegal files after the creation of a temporary web server.
Hackers also attack websites because they want to send ransomware, obtain Bitcoins or use said servers as pieces of a botnet. No matter the reasoning behind their attack, you need to stay safe. We have some tips for you to do just that.

Install a reliable security solution
As a rule of thumb, antiviruses do a great job when it comes to protecting computers from hackers. With so many excellent options around, you won't have to worry about a thing. Just take a look at their descriptions and find what works best for you. We suggest looking for something that offers web security tools so you can stay safe every time you use your website.

After choosing your favorite security solution, we recommend taking it for a spin to see whether your website is safe or not.

Switch to HTTPS
Many website owners are loyal to the HTTP protocol. Considering all the cyber attacks happening throughout the globe every minute, that's not a good idea. If you don't want to fall prey to hackers, it is imperative that you switch to HTTPS. This protocol offers better security for both you and people who interact with your site.

HTTPS is especially good if you have a website that requires its visitors to provide credit card details and other sensitive data. In order to move from HTTP to HTTPS, you have to use an SSL certificate. Don't worry, you won't have to pay a fortune to get one. The majority are either low-cost or free. One of the better options is LetsEncrypt, which is free.
Now that you've switched to HTTPS, the magic can begin. A browsing device will be linked, via encryption, to the web hosting server where important data is kept. Cyber criminals or third parties won't be able to steal sensitive information that easily.
Already using the HTTPS protocol? You can dismiss vulnerable HTTP for your website with HTTP Strict Transport Security, HSTS in short.

Perform regular automated backups
Backing up data manually on the regular is another excellent way to protect a website from malicious people. If an attack were to happen, you wouldn't lose your important files, documents, and so on. Setting up automated backups is easy and it won't cost you a thing. You can also opt for cPanel, which is a hosting service that comes with integrated backup options.

Create complex passwords
Difficult passwords make a hacker's life complicated. Make sure they contain over eight characters, letters (lower and upper case), symbols, and numbers. Make it as complex as possible and you're good to go. If you have a hard time remembering passwords, look for a password manager.
Software must be up to date
Want to keep your website safe from cyber threats? Make sure its software is updated. This includes everything from forums and CMS to the server operating system and so on. Magento, WordPress, and other platforms like them will tell you if system updates are available so you can quickly install them. Do you use many plugins? You have to manually keep them up to date, too.

Find a web application firewall
If you prefer using one security solution for your computer and a different option for your website, you can opt for a web application firewall. Otherwise known as WAF, this tool is the equivalent of an antivirus for your site. With it running on your pages, you can be sure that as soon as a threat appears, it will be quickly taken care of.

Stay safe against XSS threats
Cross-site scripting, XSS in short, is an attack that targets your website via dangerous JavaScript. The latter affects your visitors' and users' browsers and steals data which is then sent back to the hacker behind the threat. This malicious JavaScript is also able to modify the content of a page.
To avoid this type of attack, we recommend CSP, which is otherwise known as Content Security Policy. It's a tool that informs a browser to restrict what and how JavaScript is performed in a certain page or more.

Uploading files is a no go
If a user wishes to upload a certain file, stop him or her from doing it because it could pose a serious security risk. These files can have a dangerous script which will damage your website. The best solution to avoid file uploads is to block direct access to uploaded content. Should a file be uploaded to a site you own, it will be sent to a folder that exists outside of the public HTML directory.

DStv to End Its Mobile TV Service on October 31

MultiChoice has announced that it will break off its DStv Mobile TV service after 31st of October, 2018.

DStv Mobile TV has been existing since 2010 and it used DVB-H technology, allowing users to access DStv on their phone, laptop, or tablet via a Drifta mobile decoder.

The decoder received a DVB-H signal and converted it into a Wi-Fi signal for smart devices to access.

The service was N1,260  per month. DStv Premium customers received one Mobile subscription for free, with additional subscriptions charged at N1,260 per month each.
Over the last few years, technology has evolved as broadband access continues to grow. It’s not feasible to continue to maintain a separate land-based, dedicated network for this service alone, when an even better service can be offered to our customers on DStv Now via the Internet and Wi-Fi,” said MultiChoice.
As you can see DStv Now App is the main reason why Multichoice is ending its DStv mobile service. Drifta mobile decoder receives a DVB-H signal and converted it into a Wi-Fi signal for smart devices to access, but DStv Now does that over internet and Wi-Fi connectivity.

MultiChoice told customers who currently have a Mobile subscription that it has already started to switch off certain transmitters. This will impact reception for certain users.

As a result, users will not be charged their subscription fee from 1 September 2018. Decoder insurance on Mobile devices will also be canceled.

DStv Now is what is in vogue these days, so you don't need Drifta mobile decoder anymore.

8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie

Smartphone cameras let you take advantage of every available photo opportunity. But they can do more than take pictures of partying friends and sweeping landscapes. We bring to you, 8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie.
8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie

With the right apps, your camera can perform feats from translating texts to scanning paperwork.

8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie

1. Translate foreign text

With a typical translation app, you have to tap out text in a foreign language and then convert it to your native tongue, or vice versa. This can be a tedious process—especially if a server is hovering over you waiting to take your food order. Here’s a better idea: Scan the menu (or any other document) with your phone’s camera and instantly view the English translation.
You can work this trick on any phone with the free Google Translate app (for Android and iOS). Once you download the program, open it and choose the languages you’ll require—the one to be translating from and the one to be translated to—from the drop-down menus at the top of the screen. Then tap the Instant translate button, which looks like a camera with a little plus sign inside. Now point your phone’s camera at the foreign text, from road signs to paper documents, and the screen will display the translated words as if by magic.

If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone, version S8 or later, you can pull off the same feat with the native camera app. Just open it and tap the Bixby Vision button, which looks like an eye symbol, on the lower left-hand side of the screen. Then point your camera at a document, and the phone will automatically detect the language and translate the foreign words into your phone’s default tongue.

2. Explore the night sky

Gazing up at the stars on a clear night is dreamy, but you can make that experience even better by identifying which dot of light is which. With the right app, your phone’s camera will act like a star guide. Point it at the heavens, and visual overlays will tell you whether the object you’ve spotted is the International Space Station or the star Polaris.
Our top pick is Star Walk 2 (for Android and iOS), which offers a nicer design and more features than similar apps. It relies on your location and input from the phone’s internal gyroscope to pinpoint constellations, passing satellites, and other objects. You can also use it to see how the night sky changes as you move forward or backwards in time, read up on the cosmos and view 3-D models of constellations. The app is free with ads or $3 without.
As a runner-up, we like SkyView (for Android and iOS). Although its interface isn’t quite as polished as Star Walk 2’s, it can still act as a very competent guide to cosmic objects natural and man-made, with plenty of information on both. The app also has a handy feature to send you alerts about upcoming stargazing events. These baseline abilities are free, or you can pay a $1 fee to gain access to more detailed sky maps, as well as bonuses like a version of the app for your Apple Watch.

3. Add augmented reality

Want to see digital graphics overlaid on your phone camera’s view of the world? You have more options than ever before: Both Android and iOS are adding augmented reality tweaks to their respective platforms, and third-party app developers are also jumping on the AR bandwagon. 8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie.

To dip a toe into the AR waters, start with Snapchat (for Android and iOS). Install the photo and video messaging app, open the camera screen, and tap anywhere on the scene. Snapchat will immediately display a variety of AR stickers, which you can preview with a tap. Then adjust your angle, place the sticker where it fits best, and take a photo or video as normal.
If Snapchat isn’t for you, you can still enjoy AR on your phone. A few examples: PGA Tour AR (for iOS only) places golf holes on top of nearby surfaces like your kitchen counter, Inkhunter (for Android and iOS) lets you preview tattoos on your skin before you apply any needles, and the Ikea Catalog app (for Android and iOS) will drop AR versions of furniture into your real rooms so you can check out how they look.

4. Digitize paper documents

The world hasn’t gone paperless yet, but you should do your part by converting paper documents into digital form. Thanks to your phone’s camera, you can scan everything from bank statements to business cards and then keep them on your local storage or upload them to the cloud.

While you can always snap photos of documents and keep them in your default photo app’s gallery, a dedicated app will provide extra features like automatic cropping and even text recognition (so you can easily search through your scanned pages). For a full list of apps, check out this guide to paperless apps and gadgets. Of the items on the list, we like Google Drive and Dropbox best. 8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie
The versions of Google Drive for Android and iOS can both scan documents: Tap the Plus icon and choose Scan. However, only the Android app offers automatic optical character recognition—you won’t find that ability in the iOS app.
Dropbox (for Android and iOS) also includes an integrated document-scanning feature that employs your phone’s camera: From the front screen of the app, tap the Plus button, then Scan document. If you pay for a Professional ($20 per month) or Business account ($12 per user per month), you’ll also unlock automatic optical character recognition and document-searching abilities.

5. Look up information

With a little help from the Google Lens technology built into Google Photos for Android (it’s not yet available in the version of the app for iOS, although Google says it’s coming soon), you can snap an image of anything and then receive information about that object. 8 Things Your Phone Camera Can Do Other Than Selfie.

To employ this trick, use Google Photos to open any image, then tap the Google Lens button, which looks like a simplified camera shape, at the bottom of the screen. The software will recognize an object in the photo, whether it’s a historical landmark or a type of flower, and provide information about it. Think of it last visual search tool, recognizing everything from celebrities to famous works of art.
If you own a Google Pixel phone, you can also access Lens through Google Assistant. Press and hold the Home button to bring up the Assistant, then tap the Google Lens button on the lower right and point your camera at a target. Tap the screen to confirm that the pictured item is the one you want to learn about, and information will pop up on the display.
